
What is Devin?
Devin is an autonomous AI coding agent built by Cognition Labs. It works more like a full software engineer than a typing assistant. You describe a task in plain English, and Devin plans the work, writes code, runs tests, fixes errors, and opens a pull request. It runs inside a sandboxed cloud environment with a shell, code editor, and browser, and can complete many tasks a human engineer might take a few hours to finish.
Solo developers can use Devin through a web app (VS Code–style interface), Slack, GitHub, or Linear. You can tag it in Slack, assign a GitHub issue, or drop a Linear ticket, and it will report progress in real time while pausing for input when needed. The Core plan starts at $20/month, plus $2.25 per Agent Compute Unit (about 15 minutes of work). Cognition says Devin 2.0 completes 83% more junior-level tasks per ACU than version 1.
Devin is especially useful for freelancers and side projects. It performs best on repetitive tasks like bug fixes, version upgrades, and CI issues, but struggles with vague requirements that need strong product judgment.

You can assign work by tagging it in Slack, linking a ticket, or assigning a GitHub issue. It can even investigate production issues through integrations like Datadog.
- Interactive Planning and Persistent Memory: Devin 2.0 introduces Interactive Planning, where it suggests a step-by-step plan and waits for approval before starting. It also remembers details across sessions like your coding style, deploy steps, and project context so you don’t have to repeat instructions.
- Parallel Agents for Batch Work: You can run multiple Devin sessions at once and split tasks across them. This works well for large jobs like refactors, migrations, or bulk updates. Each agent reports progress separately, and you can review and merge results as they’re completed. The Core plan supports up to 10 concurrent sessions.
